The next traction was class 40 D335. As we were leaving Bury she was clagging incredibly, to the point of there being a large quantity of orange sparks in the exhaust. The driver slowed the train down considerably, and by the time we left Rammy 335 seemed to be back on form. 45135 was tailing the train, and stayed in position after the Whistler was run round at Rawtenstall. This was another head out the window run, as the sound of sixteen axles over track joints was wonderful.

The next two services were hydraulic hauled, with Hymeck 7076 standing in for 'Western' D1041, which was being serviced. Once again, very good thrash was enjoyed. I could get used to this malarkey! After 7076 came 832 again, and my head stayed resolutely out the window, in spite of the cold night air. After this run I decided that it was the appropriate moment for some kip, as I had by this time been up for 23 hours. I found myself a first class compartment in the blue/grey CK in the middle of the train, stretched out and fell asleep.

I awoke to the sound of whistling. Not an inconsiderate guard, but class 40 D345. As it was now fairly light I left the train (It was in a lay-over at Bury) and stretched my legs, allowing the fresh morning air to work into my lungs. This was a very nice feeling as the train had been very warm, to the point that I had taken my jumper off before going to sleep. Full marks to the organisers who made sure that there was train heat for almost every run. On this run any leaning out was purely for the purposes of aiding myself in waking up!

As we were returning to Bury, the guard informed us that the cafe at Bolton Street station would be open, and so a full English was eaten before joining 33117 (deputising for 50015) on the 07.40. Having got back to Bury once again, I decided to allow 45135 to do her run without me, as I wanted to see what would happen on the day's other train.
